Shocking: How Echodu’s Team Escaped a Lynching Attempt by Capt. Mike Mukula’s Hired Goons

The much-anticipated homecoming of Mr. David Calvin Echodu, an aspirant for the National Vice Chairman Eastern Region seat under the National Resistance Movement (NRM), has shaken up the political landscape in Teso Sub-region.

Viewed as a symbol of change within the party’s leadership, Echodu’s growing influence has unsettled incumbent Captain Mike Mukula, who has been under fire for allegedly using his position to amass personal wealth rather than serving the interests of the people.

On Saturday 9 May, Echodu demonstrated his mobilization prowess by organizing a homecoming event that attracted an estimated 20,000 supporters to Soroti Sports Ground , however, the event was marred by reports of sabotage orchestrated by Capt. Mukula, who allegedly sought to disrupt the rally and intimidate Echodu’s supporters.

Sources revealed that upon realizing the magnitude of Echodu’s support, Mukula mobilized a group of rowdy individuals, reportedly intoxicated, to stir up violence.

The group, said to have been paid 1.5 million shillings, was tasked with creating chaos along Echodu’s convoy route. Using the Voice of Teso Van, the goons, under the command of Oculi, Chairman of the Boda Boda association, moved through Soroti city attempting to provoke violence.

By 2:00 PM, this group was seen advancing towards Echodu’s convoy as it made its way from Gweri Road into the city. However, security operatives, having received prior intelligence on the planned disruption, were well-prepared. According to Augustine Otuko, Echodu’s spokesperson, the group was intercepted by security forces led by Soroti Central Police Station’s DPC, Mr. Okanya, and Resident City Commissioner Peter Pex Paak.

“The team believed to be carrying sharp objects was intercepted by the security operatives, after failing to breach the convoy, they diverted to Edyegu Road via Soroti Main Market and later regrouped at Pioneer Primary School,” Otuko told Patriot on Tuesday.

Otuko accused Mukula of trying to intimidate Echodu’s supporters, aware of the aspirant’s growing popularity, he suggested that the disruption was not only meant to sabotage the rally but could have also been an attempt to physically harm Echodu, who has emerged as a formidable challenger to Mukula’s long-standing dominance.

He further called on the government to enhance security around Echodu, warning of continued threats from Mukula’s camp as the campaigns heat up.

While the police have yet to issue an official statement on the incident, several political analysts have condemned Mukula’s alleged involvement, warning against inciting electoral violence.

Benson Ekuwe, Director of the Public Affairs Center Uganda, criticized politicians who incite violence, emphasizing the need for peaceful campaigns.

“I call upon aspirants and political actors at all levels to desist from inciting violence, the recent incident involving Capt. Mike Mukula should be stopped immediately. Political violence endangers lives, and I urge the public to reject any leader who employs such tactics,” Ekuwe stated.

Despite the tension, Echodu remained composed, expressing gratitude to the people of Teso for their overwhelming support.

“I thank the people of Teso for standing with me. Your support is a sign that change is on the way. I urge you to embrace unity and love, let us avoid violence. We can achieve victory through peace and show a different kind of leadership,” Echodu said.

In response, Capt. Mike Mukula appeared on his Voice of Teso radio station a day after the event. While he addressed various issues raised during Echodu’s rally, he notably avoided commenting on the violent disruptions linked to his camp.

He promised another address in a week’s time, leaving many wondering if he will tackle the allegations head-on.

As the political season intensifies, the electorate in Teso watches closely, hoping for a peaceful and issue-based campaign devoid of violence and intimidation.
