Jacob Eyeru, The Soroti County NRM MP aspirant, has raised serious concerns over alleged election irregularities during the recent NRM structural elections in Ocokchan Sub-county, Soroti County. In a strongly-worded letter addressed to the NRM Electoral Commission, Eyeru is demanding urgent clarification and redress, citing violations that he believes threaten the integrity of the party’s democratic processes.
Eyeru claimed that the Sub-county Registrar held a night meeting at the residence of Hon. Patrick Aeku, the incumbent MP for Soroti County, on the eve of the elections. “Why was an official of the NRM Electoral Commission meeting with a candidate and selected delegates at night, at a private residence?” Eyeru questioned, describing the incident as a blatant breach of impartiality.
Eyeru also revealed that the registrar attempted to sneak Hon. Patrick Aeku onto the delegates’ list as the Vice Chairperson of Omodoi Parish, despite Aeku not having contested for the position. “It was only after an uproar and the intervention of the actual Parish Chairperson that the attempt was thwarted,” he said.
Further concerns were raised over the nomination and election of John Okalang as Sub-county Chairperson. Eyeru alleged that Okalang was initially nominated for Vice Chairperson but was suddenly permitted to run for the Chairperson’s position without proof of nomination fee payment or due qualification. Eyeru also claimed that Okalang is currently serving as a Parish Internal Security Officer (PISO), a public service role that legally bars him from engaging in partisan elections.
“If this is true, then his election is null and void. I’m calling for the immediate declaration of the first runner-up, Richard Awenu, as the rightful Sub-county Chairperson in line with established NRM precedent,” Eyeru stated. Eyeru issued an ultimatum to the NRM Electoral Commission, demanding that corrective measures be taken before June 10, 2025, at 5 PM.
“Soroti County has only 126 villages, and if nearly a third of them are compromised under a biased registrar, then we cannot speak of a fair election. I will not participate in a process predetermined by the incumbent MP,” he warned. Copies of his letter have been shared with senior party officials, including the National Chairman and Secretary General of the NRM.
