As political strategies take shape, the Democratic Party (DP) has gathered members of the National Council in Soroti to chart a course for navigating the political dynamics ahead of the 2026 elections.
Addressing the press at the May 7 Hotel in Soroti City West Division, DP Secretary General, Dr. Siranda Gerald Blacks, stated that the meeting, scheduled from Wednesday 5th March to Friday 7th March, aims to enhance their preparation and grassroots mobilization ahead of the upcoming elections.
The theme of this year’s conference is ‘Overcoming Political Untouchability.’
Siranda mentioned that the delegates are meeting in Soroti to discuss policies that will advance the party, address national issues, and amplify the party’s role in building its structures.
Key agenda items include surveying constituencies with potential for victory and brainstorming financial mobilization strategies.
Furthermore, the Secretary General will announce the proposed date for the next National Delegates Conference, which the National Council members are expected to approve. This conference will include the election of the next Party President and the Presidential flag bearer, among other significant matters.
“Our determination to win the next presidential race is very strong this time. We are rapidly building structures in each village, with a target of recruiting 1.7 million supporters countrywide,” he said.
He added, “We don’t expect any disruption or chaos from the police, and I want to warn them in advance—we have already notified them.”
Moses Ocole, the DP Presidential Envoy for the Eastern Region, emphasized the significance of the meeting, noting that members would discuss the ‘real token of Teso’ as the party pushes forward the Teso Agenda.
According to Ocole, while President Museveni has made several high-level appointments from the region, Teso is still grappling with numerous challenges. He stressed the critical need to highlight the pressing issues affecting the people of Teso, such as education, healthcare, poverty, agriculture, and infrastructure.
‘We need to focus on these pressing issues while maintaining our peaceful approach of engaging the government through the DP and NRM collaboration,’ he said.
The Party President, Norbert Mao, is expected to grace the event, which will commence on Wednesday at the May 7 Hotel in Soroti.
