At a gathering held at the home of Joseph Ijala, a renowned model farmer in Serere District, Soroti County MP Patrick Aeku called on Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Anita Among to support District Local and Executive leaders in establishing farms as part of a broader push to implement the 4-acre model promoted by President Museveni.
Speaking ahead of the President’s visit, Aeku emphasized the importance of political leaders leading by example. “How do we go to our electorate and tell them to start the 4-acre model farms when we ourselves don’t have anything to show? Leadership is about setting the pace. The President has farms, and when he speaks, people listen because he has something tangible to demonstrate,” Aeku remarked, urging the Speaker to assist local leaders in starting such ventures.
Aeku’s appeal was met with enthusiasm by members of the district executive in attendance, including Hon. Stephen Ochola (LC5 Chairperson), Hon. Beatrice Ann Abeja (Vice Chairperson), Hon. Opio Joseph Linos (Secretary for Finance, Planning, and Administration), Hon. Odicha Moses (Secretary for Production), and Hon. Olupot Sam (Secretary for Social Services).
In her response, Speaker Among did not directly address Aeku’s request but acknowledged the profound impact of Ijala’s achievements. “Joseph Ijala has challenged me. In two months, my farm in Bukedea will be unrecognizable. I am inspired to take farming more seriously,” she said, praising the host’s success.
President Museveni arrived later and commended Ijala for his remarkable achievements, noting that he makes an annual profit of UGX 600 million. The President donated UGX 12 million to support the education of Ijala’s daughters and promised UGX 150 million for the purchase of a yoghurt-making machine. “This machine will not only benefit Ijala but also the many villagers who are keeping cows. It’s a project that uplifts the community,” Museveni stated.
The event was attended by prominent figures, including Fisheries Minister Hon. Hellen Adoa, and Serere RDC Adiama Anthony, among others. District heads and members of the local government also showed strong support for Ijala’s exemplary work.
The call by Aeku and the President’s recognition of Ijala highlight the importance of practical leadership and sustainable development models in uplifting rural communities across Uganda.
