Mt. Moroto Region, Uganda – A joint effort by the community and security teams in Napak District has led to the successful recovery of five heads of cattle stolen by suspected Pian warriors. The cattle were taken from Lokorwa Lino’s grazing land in Nanawara village, Nakichumet parish, Matany subcounty, on January 23, 2025.
During the raid, a 7-year-old shepherd, Lemukol Mahana, was abducted but was later released unharmed. The stolen cattle were tracked to Nabilatuk, where community members found them abandoned in Ariamaoi. The cattle have been driven to the Nabilatuk holding ground, and the owners have been informed to collect them.
This successful recovery highlights the effectiveness of community-security force collaboration in combating cattle theft and ensuring community safety. The authorities commend the efforts of the community members and security team for their prompt action in recovering the stolen cattle.
“We are pleased to announce that all five heads of cattle have been recovered,” said IP Longole Mike, Ag. PRO MT Moroto/ASTU. “This successful recovery demonstrates the effectiveness of community-security force collaboration in combating cattle theft and ensuring the safety and security of our communities.”
Efforts to prevent such incidents and bring perpetrators to justice are ongoing. This incident comes amid concerns about cattle theft in the region, with some districts reporting significant losses. However, security forces have been working to recover stolen cattle and bring perpetrators to justice, with some notable successes in recent months.
The recovery of the stolen cattle is a welcome relief to the community, and it is hoped that it will serve as a deterrent to would-be cattle thieves.
