MARACHA: Medical staff at Tara Health Centre III in Tara Sub-county, Maracha East constituency, have suspended routine work for over a month following the assault of their incharge, Mr. Odama James. The incident occurred at night in Ajira Sub-county, which was carved out of Tara Sub-county in 2020.
The assault, which took place in early June 2024, reportedly involved a conflict between Mr. Odama James and a man named Ayima from Lodre village, Aringa Parish, Ajira Sub-county. Both men were allegedly dating the same woman, Sharon Asizo. Mr. Odama was hospitalized due to his injuries, while the suspect remains at large.
The attack on Mr. Odama, coupled with a history of threats against health workers at Tara Health Centre III, has led staff to suspend their work, raising concerns and anger among various stakeholders. Some have even suggested the total closure of the health facility due to ongoing threats.
Betty Tiaza, the mother of Sharon Asizo, expressed sympathy for Mr. Odama and urged the community not to exaggerate the situation with false information. Veteran journalist Osman Draga criticized Mr. Odama’s behavior, attributing the incident to his misconduct.
Rt. Hon. Wanni Emmanuel, Speaker for Maracha District and Councilor representing Tara Sub-county, condemned certain district technical staff for mocking and blackmailing the residents of greater Tara Sub-county. Assistant District Health Officer in charge of maternal health, Draru Jessica Edria, expressed frustration over the assault and called for forgiveness.
The district health team has not yet decided on a replacement for Mr. Odama, who remains hospitalized and unable to speak due to the severity of his injuries. The uncertainty surrounding his recovery and the future staffing of Tara Health Centre III continues to be a pressing concern for the local community.
