The latest update in Soroti main market shows that vegetable prices is rapidly shooting high towards the end of February.
The heaps inside the market stoles have gone scarce as vendors deprive low supply by the farmers due to the dry spell.
Currently, a kilogram of tomatoes has risen from ugshs 2000 to ugshs 2500 and ugshs 3000 depending on the quality, while Onions has clinched to ugshs 3500 and ugshs 4000 from ugshs 2500 and ugshs 3000 previously.
Kilogram of garlic currently goes for ugshs 22000.
Margret Akiror a vendor told this website that the situation may even worsen if the supply continues dropping down due to accelerated droughts.
“It is quit unfortunate that our suppliers from Mbale have hiked their wholesale prices due to the narrowing supply by the farmers.” she said
Vegetable growing is not highly embraced in Teso during the dry spell except a few persevering farmers who are have access to the water for irrigation.
The Elgon region therefore remains the key supplier of vegetables like tomatoes, onions among others.
