A tragic incident occurred in Awiirich village, Abirabira parish, Aperkira sub-county, Kaberamaido District, where three people were struck by lightning during a heavy downpour. The victims, Melda Aligo, 32, Catherine Adiro, 70, and Ezekiel Obongi, 13, a pupil at Abirabira Primary School, took shelter in St. Michael Catholic Chapel.
According to Lawrence Ebanu, NRM chairman for Abirabira parish, the incident happened around 5 pm. Nicholas Egiru, brother of one of the deceased, explained that the group had gathered for their savings meeting and sought refuge in the church when the rain started. Unfortunately, the lightning struck the church, claiming the lives of the three individuals.
The bodies were recovered, with one being taken to Kaberamaido General Hospital for a postmortem examination, while the other was handed over to the family for burial.
