Kotido, Uganda – Two suspects have been apprehended by authorities in Nakapelimoru, Karamoja region, for illegal possession of wildlife products.
Alait Lotuka and Alepit Raphael were taken into custody on October 24, 2024, following a tip-off from a vigilant community member. The suspects were found with illicit goods, including warthog (wild pig) and ostrich meat, protected under Ugandan law.
The successful operation was a result of swift collaboration between the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and Kotido Central Police Station. UWA officials received the tip-off and promptly requested police reinforcement, leading to the suspects’ arrest.
A UWA official, who wished to remain anonymous, condemned poaching. “Poaching threatens Uganda’s biodiversity and ecosystem. We’ll continue working with law enforcement to bring perpetrators to justice.”
The official praised the community’s involvement. “We appreciate the public’s support in combating wildlife crime. This arrest demonstrates the power of collaboration.”
The arrests come amid concerns about wildlife trafficking in Karamoja. Conservation efforts are underway to protect endangered species and preserve Uganda’s natural heritage. The government has strengthened laws, engaged local communities, and promoted sustainable livelihoods.
The police and UWA urge anyone with information on wildlife crime to report to the nearest authorities.
This breakthrough highlights the importance of community-led conservation and effective collaboration in protecting Uganda’s precious wildlife.
