In a significant move towards enhancing regional security and development, local authorities from Uganda and South Sudan have unanimously agreed on several measures to strengthen cross-border cooperation.
The strategic engagement meeting, held on June 5, 2024, at Magwi headquarters, was attended by officials from Lamwo District in Uganda and Magwi County in South Sudan. The meeting was hosted by Commissioner Pole-Pole Benjamin Olum and Lamwo District Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Mr. Oceng Geoffrey Osborn
Mr. Oceng explained that the primary aim of the meeting was to discuss and coordinate border management and security issues between the neighboring districts and counties. The discussions highlighted several persistent challenges, including cattle rustling, cross-border livestock theft, illegal border crossings, human trafficking, cross-border crime, and smuggling. Additionally, the lack of coordinated responses between security agencies on both sides of the border was identified as a major obstacle.
The authorities agreed on several strategic measures to address these issues. Key among them is the strengthening of information sharing and joint operations between the two regions. This includes establishing regular coordination meetings and creating efficient communication channels between the security agencies. By sharing intelligence and coordinating joint operations, they aim to effectively tackle cross-border crimes.
Furthermore, the development of cross-border infrastructure and connectivity was emphasized. Plans include the construction and maintenance of roads, bridges, and border posts to facilitate smoother and more secure transit between the two countries.
Commissioner Oceng Geoffrey Osborn expressed optimism that these measures will lead to a significant reduction in cross-border crimes and improve overall security and development in the region. The commitment to regular engagements and collaborative efforts marks a promising step towards a safer and more connected Uganda-South Sudan border area.
