Recent demands by the Youth League of the Patriotic League of Uganda for President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to hand over the presidency to his son, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, have sparked significant debate. While the call for a peaceful transition is rooted in a desire for stability, it is imperative to consider the broader picture and the journey Uganda has embarked upon since 1986 under President Museveni’s leadership.
Uganda is not a kingdom where succession is a birthright. However, the destiny of our nation rests in the hands of its voters. It is they who will determine the right time for a change in leadership. Museveni himself recently has stated that NRM leaders should not impose candidates on the people but let them choose their leaders.
For starters to understand why Uganda still needs President Museveni, we must reflect on the transformative progress we have achieved under his stewardship. In 1986, Uganda was a failed state, plagued by civil strife, economic collapse, and international isolation. The country was a raw material-based economy with deficient supplies of essential commodities. Today, Uganda stands as a aign of stability and progress, a functional state with a booming manufacturing economy, surplus commodities for export, and a growing middle-income status.
President Museveni has not only rebuilt our economy but has also transformed the Uganda People’s Defense Force (UPDF) into a national, pro-people army. This army has played a pivotal role in securing peace and stability, allowing for economic growth and development.
Moreover, Uganda’s political environment has become one of the most diverse and democratic in Africa. From village-level elections to presidential elections, Ugandans exercise their right to choose their leaders through adult suffrage. This model has been emulated by many developing countries on the continent.
The achievements of the NRM under Museveni’s leadership are undeniable. From turning Uganda into a middle-income economy to fostering a democratic political system, Museveni has laid a strong foundation for future generations.
To me,the right time for transition will come, not by command but by consensus and preparedness. It will be when the voters deems it fit, having done all in his power to prepare Uganda for the future. Until then, we must trust in his wisdom and leadership. The voters will ultimately decide when the time is right, ensuring that the transition is in the best interest of Uganda and its people.
In conclusion, while the call for a peaceful transition is valid, it is crucial to recognize the profound progress Uganda has made under President Museveni. Uganda is a democratic state, and the transition of power is achieved through the ballot box. Anyone with the ability and desire to lead should seek nomination and stand for election. The wisdom of knowing when to pass the baton lies with the electorate. Uganda’s journey is far from over, and Museveni’s leadership remains vital to completing the vision he has set for our great nation.
