Ugandan Foreign Affairs Minister, Gen Jeje Odongo, met with British High Commissioner to Uganda, H.E. Kate Airey, pressing for evidence to confirm Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among’s alleged property ownership in the UK. President Museveni, prompted by claims of Among’s UK property, urged Odongo to engage British authorities for relevant data.
In a letter dated May 2, Museveni informed Odongo of Ambassador Kate’s assertion regarding Among’s purported UK properties. However, Kate has yet to provide supporting evidence despite inquiries from Odongo. Museveni, seeking clarification, questioned Among on her alleged ownership of a property in London.
The revelation came after Ugandan officials, conducting a search with the UK’s Land Registry, found that the apartment in question is owned by the London Legacy Development Corporation, not Among. Among vehemently denied owning any property in the UK, stating, “I don’t even have a pussycat there.”
The situation poses potential embarrassment for the British government if Kate’s information is proven flawed or false. Meanwhile, Odongo met with the US Ambassador to Uganda, William W. Popp, engaging in discussions to strengthen bilateral relations.
In a separate development, the US imposed sanctions on former Ministers Mary Goretti Kitutu and Agnes Nandutu, as well as Speaker Among, for their alleged involvement in significant corruption. Minister of State for Finance Amos Lugolobi and Lt. Gen. Peter Elwelu were also designated by the US for similar allegations.
The saga underscores the complexity of international relations and the importance of verifying information before making diplomatic assertions.
