OPINION BY ARRON OKALEBO
In the heart of Uganda, where traditions run deep,
A clash of two worlds makes the old folks weep.
On one side, the elders with wisdom to share,
On the other, the youth with their wild, carefree flair.
“Respect your elders!” the grannies proclaim,
As they shake their heads at this new-fangled game.
“Back in our day, we wore clothes that were neat,
Not this TikTok nonsense, what a shameful feat!”
But the youth just laugh, with their phones held up high,
“Why should we abide? We’re reaching for the sky!
With filters and hashtags, we’ll show you our style,
Tradition is so boring; it’s just not worthwhile!”
“Look at our dances!” they shout with delight,
While grandpas roll eyes at this digital fright.
“Where’s the respect?” they grumble and groan,
As the youth post their antics from their very own home.
Yet in this great battle of old versus new,
Satire emerges with a humorous view.
“Dear elders,” it quips, “you once danced in the rain,
Now you frown at our freedom! Oh, what a pain!”
With memes that go viral and jokes that ignite,
The youth poke fun at tradition’s tight grip so tight.
“Why wear a kanzu when you can wear leggings?
Let us mix up our cultures, let us shatter routines!”
But here lies the truth in this cultural dance:
Both sides have a place; let us give them a chance.
For tradition holds wisdom like roots of a tree,
While modernity sprinkles in fresh energy.
So, let us raise a toast to this vibrant exchange,
Where tradition meets modernity, how wonderfully strange!
In Uganda’s rich tapestry, let us weave them as one,
For together we flourish; together we have won!
So, toast to the elders who taught us to stand,
And to the youths who remind us that change is quite grand.
In laughter and satire, we shall find common ground
In this dance of tradition and modernity found!
