Vice President Jessica Alupo arrived this morning at Ndadaye Melchior International Airport in Bujumbura, Burundi, where she will represent President Yoweri Museveni at the 23rd Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) Summit. The summit brings together leaders from the COMESA region to discuss matters of economic integration, trade, and cooperation among member states. Alupo, who was warmly received by Burundi’s Minister for Trade, Transport, Industry, and Tourism, Marie Chantal Nijimbere, and Bujumbura’s Mayor, Jimmy Hatungimana, will join other heads of state and government officials in advancing Uganda’s interests in regional development.
This summit marks a continuation of the Vice President’s recent international engagements. She arrived directly from Samoa, where she represented President Museveni at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). Alupo’s swift transition between these two major global platforms reflects Uganda’s active role in international diplomacy and its commitment to strengthening ties both within Africa and across the Commonwealth.
The Ugandan delegation, which includes representatives from Uganda’s Embassy in Bujumbura, will work alongside other COMESA nations to discuss strategic initiatives in trade, industry, and regional connectivity.
The 23rd COMESA Summit is expected to focus on deepening economic integration, addressing trade barriers, and fostering growth in critical sectors such as agriculture and technology. Uganda’s participation underscores its dedication to advancing a cooperative agenda that can drive sustainable economic progress across the continent.
