The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has achieved a significant milestone in enhancing water transport on Lake Kyoga with the completion of sea trials for two newly constructed ferries, MV BKK 1 and MV BKK 2. These trials mark the final phase of testing before the ferries are officially commissioned, setting the stage for improved connectivity and economic development across the eastern region of Uganda.
MV BKK 1 will provide a vital link between Bukungu and Kagwara, serving the communities in Serere and Soroti, while MV BKK 2 will connect Bukungu to Akampala, enhancing access to Kaberamaido. Once operational, these ferries will create seamless connections across more than eight districts, bridging the Busoga, Teso, Kaberamaido, and Lango subregions.
Sea trials, a critical phase in vessel construction, assess the ferries’ strength, stability, and readiness for operational deployment. These rigorous tests ensure that the vessels are safe to navigate open waters and meet the needs of their future users. “Sea trials are the ultimate test for a vessel, where the ferry proves its strength, stability, and readiness to conquer the waves,” UNRA shared on its X platform.
The construction of MV BKK 1 and MV BKK 2 was carried out in collaboration with M/s Songoro Marine Transport Limited (SMT), a firm renowned for its expertise in marine engineering. UNRA officials expressed their excitement about the project’s progress. “We are thrilled to see this vision come to life. These ferries will not only enhance connectivity but also drive economic development and social integration in the region,” they stated.
The new ferry service is set to transform lives and regional trade by improving access to markets, essential services, and tourism opportunities. It will link culturally rich regions, reduce travel time, and enhance safety for waterway users, offering a reliable alternative to traditional modes of transport.
The commissioning of MV BKK 1 and MV BKK 2 represents a significant leap in Uganda’s commitment to developing infrastructure and fostering regional growth. Residents and stakeholders eagerly await the official launch, which is expected to open a new chapter in the history of Lake Kyoga water transport. This initiative promises not only to connect vibrant communities but also to catalyze regional economic growth and social integration, shaping a brighter future for the eastern region of Uganda.
