In a resounding victory, Sarah Aguti of the Uganda Peoples’ Congress (UPC) secured the Dokolo District Woman MP seat in a fiercely contested by-election held on Thursday. The Electoral Commission’s Returning Officer, Ngobi Erikwaine, officially declared Aguti as the winner, having garnered an impressive 23,044 votes.
The by-election, necessitated by the unfortunate passing of former MP Hon. Cecilia Atim Ogwal, saw a total of six candidates vying for the esteemed position. Aguti’s closest competitor, Janet Rose Adongo Elau of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), trailed behind with 14,001 votes, marking a significant gap between the two leading candidates.
The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) candidate, Austin Rosemary Alwoc Ogwal, clinched the third position with 8,168 votes, reflecting the diverse range of political ideologies present in the electoral contest.
The victory of Sarah Aguti not only underscores the support garnered by the UPC in the Dokolo District but also highlights the confidence reposed in her leadership abilities by the electorate. With her ascension to the position of District Woman Representative to Parliament, Aguti is poised to champion the interests and concerns of the constituents, thereby perpetuating a legacy of service and dedication to the people of Dokolo.
As the newly elected MP prepares to assume her responsibilities, expectations are high for her to address pressing issues affecting the district, ranging from healthcare and education to infrastructure development and economic empowerment.
The outcome of the Dokolo Woman MP By-election serves as a testament to the democratic process in Uganda and reaffirms the electorate’s commitment to shaping the future of their communities through active participation in the electoral process.
