Katakwi — Vice President Maj. (Rtd) Jessica Alupo has commissioned the Sh937 million Akoboi Health Centre III in Akoboi Sub-county, Katakwi District. The upgraded facility, funded by the Government of Uganda and the World Bank, now includes a maternity ward, two-in-one staff houses, pit latrines, a laboratory, and a placenta pit.
During the launch, Alupo urged local communities to improve their eating habits as a preventive measure against diseases. She emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing the road network for easier access to health facilities. Additionally, she promised to increase the number of health workers at the Akoboi Health Unit, connect electricity to the staff houses, and improve the piped water supply.
Geoffrey Omolo, the LC V Chairman, thanked the government and development partners for the new facility and requested the fencing of the health unit. He also urged the community to focus on disease prevention. Katakwi Resident District Commissioner Maj. Godfrey Katamba highlighted that the upgrade of Akoboi to a Health Centre III aligns with the country’s efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goal number three. For the past 23 years, Akoboi operated as a Health Centre II, serving more than 14,805 patients from Akoboi Sub-county and nearby Getom Sub-county, with 40-50 women delivering monthly.
The health centre has been equipped with an oxygen concentrator, a nebulizer, weighing scales, and torches, significantly improving its service delivery capabilities. This development marks a significant milestone in enhancing healthcare access and quality for the local communities, reinforcing the government’s dedication to improving public health infrastructure in Uganda.
