KATAKWI – A momentous occasion unfolded in Katakwi as Vice President of Uganda, Maj. (Rtd) Jessica Alupo, was bestowed with the prestigious Most Excellent Order of the Pearl of Africa (Grand Commander) medal by President Yoweri Museveni during the Women’s Day celebrations at Boma Grounds.

Established in 2001 under the National Honours and Awards Act, the ‘Excellent Order of the Pearl of Africa’ (Grand Commander) stands as the highest civilian honour in Uganda. President Museveni, in his commendation, extolled Alupo’s unwavering commitment, exceptional contributions, and remarkable achievements in fostering the nation’s development.

Alupo’s dedication to Uganda and her significant strides in women’s empowerment have elevated her to a prominent stature within the nation’s leadership realm, as emphasized by President Museveni. The ceremony, witnessed by an exuberant crowd, celebrated Alupo’s resilience and outstanding service to the nation.

Among the 53 individuals recognized for their outstanding contributions, Soroti Resident City Commissioner Peter Pex Paak and Teddy Acham, the NRM mobiliser, were highlighted for their dedication and commitment to Uganda’s progress.

Maj. Gen. George Igumba, the Chancery to the Presidential Awards Committee, elucidated that the ‘Excellent Order of the Pearl of Africa’ (Grand Commander) is reserved for distinguished leaders and individuals who have made indelible marks on Uganda’s social and economic landscape.

With this accolade, Vice President Alupo joins an esteemed cohort of African leaders, including Tanzanian former leaders Julius Nyerere (posthumous) and H.E Jakaya Kikwete, Rwandan President Paul Kagame, Theodora Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, President of Equatorial Guinea, Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa, and Mozambican former President Armando Guebuza.

The recognition of Vice President Alupo underscores Uganda’s commitment to honoring excellence and acknowledging individuals whose efforts propel the nation forward. Alupo’s recognition serves as a beacon of inspiration, heralding a new chapter in Uganda’s pursuit of progress and prosperity.
