A flurry of activities has engulfed Katakwi District in anticipation of International Women’s Day, slated for tomorrow, Friday, March 8th, 2024. The forthcoming celebrations, set to unfold at Katakwi District Boma Grounds, have brought smiles of hope and optimism to many faces.

Vice President Jessica Alupo spearheaded various initiatives today, including the distribution of essential items to female entrepreneurs in Katakwi Town Council. As part of the activities, Alupo, a member of the Visionary Women organization comprising former and current female MPs, facilitated the delivery of 1500 plates and 1500 reusable pads to female restaurant owners, aiming to empower women and the girl child.

Moreover, VP Alupo inaugurated a solar-powered project in Alukuchok village, Akoboi Subcounty, serving 22 villages, including Katakwi Town Council. The project, valued at 416 million shillings, is expected to enhance access to clean energy. Additionally, the construction of a girls’ dormitory at Usuk Kids Primary School in Usuk Town Council was officially launched.

Renowned Teso politician Christine Amongin Aporu, also a member of the Visionary Women organization, emphasized their support for Katakwi residents, citing VP Alupo’s affiliation with the group as a motivating factor.

Kabakumba Matsiko the former government Chief Whip reiterated the organization’s commitment to empowering the female community, highlighting the distribution of plates and pads as a pilot initiative with plans for wider implementation.

Expressing gratitude, Matsiko thanked the President and VP Alupo for their dedication to women’s empowerment. She emphasized the organization’s readiness to collaborate and extend support to women across the country.

VP Alupo commended Uganda’s women and men for their contributions to gender equality. She acknowledged President Museveni’s leadership in implementing policies conducive to women’s advancement and fostering an inclusive environment for all citizens.

The theme for International Women’s Day 2024, “Accelerating gender equality through women economic empowerment,” resonates with Uganda’s efforts to promote women’s participation in economic development. VP Alupo underscored the importance of empowering women, emphasizing their pivotal role as agents of change within families and communities.

She urged Ugandans to uphold the government’s commitment to gender equality and applauded various stakeholders for their contributions to women’s empowerment in Katakwi. VP Alupo assured visitors of a peaceful and secure environment during the celebrations, urging them to partake in the festivities wholeheartedly.

As Katakwi eagerly anticipates International Women’s Day, VP Alupo’s unwavering commitment to gender equality serves as a beacon of hope for women across Uganda.
