Vice President Maj. (Rtd) Jessica Alupo has called on parents to prioritize girl-child education, highlighting it as key to breaking the cycle of poverty. Speaking at the inauguration of St. Elizabeth Girls’ School in Kikumbo, Rubirizi district, Alupo emphasized that educated women are vital assets to their families, communities, and the nation.
She urged parents to instill values and morals in their daughters, ensuring they remain in school. “This school is a testament to the government’s commitment to empower girls through education,” Alupo said, crediting the school’s establishment to collaboration between Kikumbo Catholic Parish, led by Father Alex Mubangizi, and area MP Hon. Muhammad Kato.
Drawing inspiration from the biblical Parable of the Mustard Seed, Alupo encouraged the community to nurture the school, which began with just four classrooms. She advised students to focus on their studies, remain disciplined, and avoid reckless behavior, reminding them of their potential to uplift their families and communities.
The vice president also praised the school’s strong foundation rooted in church values and thanked the founders for their leadership in setting up a facility that caters to students from Rubirizi and neighboring districts like Moyo, Ntungamo, and Mbarara.
Hon. Kato revealed that the school plans to expand to accommodate growing enrolment by constructing a three-story building. Father Mubangizi, in his sermon, urged students to avoid early marriages and unplanned pregnancies, which could derail their educational journey.
St. Elizabeth Girls’ School opened on 3rd February 2024, starting with only Senior One and Senior Two classes, and has quickly gained a reputation as a beacon of hope for girls in the region.
