SOROTI, UGANDA – The National Unity Platform (NUP) today held a rally at Arrow Square grounds in Soroti, following the opening of its new party offices in the city. The event, which was also broadcast live on 91.5 KVR Radio, saw the party’s leadership address the people of Teso, outlining their plans for revitalizing the region’s economy and fighting corruption.
The rally came despite attempts by security operatives to disrupt the program. The security forces had initially tried to prevent the event from taking place, a move that the NUP leaders condemned as a provocation aimed at stifling democratic engagement.
In his address, the NUP representative reminded the people of Teso of the once-thriving cotton industry, which, he argued, had been deliberately crippled by the current regime. “The cotton sector was vital to the livelihoods of many families in this region, but under the regime, it was suffocated to impoverish our people. We are committed to revamping this industry and ensuring that it once again becomes a cornerstone of Teso’s economic revival,” he stated.
The message also touched on the broader issue of corruption, which the NUP leadership said has crippled service delivery and hindered the provision of basic social services. “Corruption is the root cause of the suffering many of our people face. It robs them of effective public services and keeps them trapped in poverty. We are committed to eradicating this vice and ensuring that public resources are used for the benefit of the people,” the leader added.
The rally was well-attended by local supporters, with many expressing their excitement about the party’s message of change. “We are tired of the same old promises and empty rhetoric. Today, we are hearing a message of real change. We are ready to take back our region and our country,” said one attendee from Soroti.
The NUP thanked the people of Soroti for their enthusiastic support and encouraged them to continue rallying behind the party’s cause. “We are here today because of you, and we are committed to working with you to bring the change that Teso and Uganda so desperately need,” the leader emphasized.
Looking ahead, the NUP leadership announced plans to take a brief pause tomorrow before heading to Kisoro on Monday to canvass support for Comrade Sultana Salim (Tana), a candidate running under the NUP banner. The nationwide tour is part of the party’s broader efforts to rally Ugandans across the country under the banner of People Power, Our Power
As the NUPCountrywideTour continues, the party’s message remains clear: a united front to challenge the status quo and bring about a government that serves the people, not the elites.
