Kotido,Uganda-A surge in wildfire incidents has hit the Kidepo and Karamoja regions, prompting concerns among local communities and authorities. The dry season has created a volatile environment, with wildfires spreading rapidly across the regions, destroying properties and leaving residents in a state of distress.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Narusha Kalisto, Regional Community Liaison Officer, confirmed the increase in wildfire incidents and emphasized the need for community vigilance and proactive measures to prevent wildfires. “We have seen a notable rise in wildfire incidents during this dry season. It is crucial for everyone to take necessary precautions to protect our environment and communities,” he said.
The wildfires have been particularly devastating, with several villages and properties destroyed. Recently, the fire destroyed 4 villages in Nabilatuk District, Lorengdwat in Nakapiripirit District, Kobulin parish, Nakwakwa villages and Mmaru subcounty in Kotido District. Yesterday, the fire broke out in Lolelei subcounty, Kasile Subcounty, Lobongia subcounty and Kotirwae subcounty in Kaabong District, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.
One of the victims of yesterday’s fire, Nachomin Muria, from Lodwar East Village, Morulem Parish, Kaabong East, reported that the wildfire was allegedly set by an unknown person. The fire burnt all her sorghum from the garden before it could be thrashed. “Nobody was around to help,” she lamented. The affected communities have been left to count their losses, with many struggling to come to terms with the devastation.
To mitigate the risks, ASP Kalisto provided essential guidelines, which include avoiding open fires, properly disposing of cigarettes, creating firebreaks around properties, keeping emergency contact numbers handy, participating in community awareness programs, slashing around manyattas, controlling fires for charcoal burning, cautioning young children, and exercising caution while thrashing crops. By taking these proactive measures, residents can reduce the risk of wildfires and protect their communities.
Local authorities are working closely with community leaders to implement these guidelines and raise awareness about the dangers of wildfires. The collaboration aims to reduce the risk of wildfires and ensure the safety of the region’s residents.
As the dry season continues, it is imperative for everyone to remain vigilant and adhere to the guidelines provided by the authorities. Together, the community can work towards preventing wildfires and protecting the natural beauty of the Kidepo and Karamoja regions.
