Kaberamaido District’s paramount chief, Papa Kumam Raphael Otaya, has urged his subjects to embrace entrepreneurship as a pathway to economic transformation and self-reliance. Speaking at the Annual General Assembly of the Asurat clan in Ocanoyere village, Otaya emphasized the importance of shifting from job-seeking to creating innovative business solutions to tackle unemployment in the region.
Otaya advised young people to start small ventures and build them into sustainable businesses, focusing on cash-based businesses to grow financially. He also encouraged the community to take advantage of readily available resources and create opportunities for themselves.
The paramount chief addressed the challenges of laziness and the pursuit of luxury, urging men to focus on productive ventures such as short-term crops farming. He stressed the need for discipline, hard work, and a commitment to community development.
Dr. Elyanu Peter, the host and NRM candidate hopeful for Ochero constituency, requested the Resident District Commissioner to notify President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to offer scholarships to the Kumam community. He cited three students who failed to join university due to inability to afford tuition fees.
Resident District Commissioner Linos Lotem Lokori noted that despite being blessed with land, the Kumam community is struggling with poverty. He urged leaders to encourage productivity among both youth and men.
The Woman MP for Kaberamaido District, Hon. Jane Awichi, thanked the Asurat clan for their commitment and dedication to serving their people. She requested the Kumam community to stand up for their identity and respect their paramount chief.
